General surgery (sometimes referred to simply as "surgery") is a specialty dedicated to performing procedures on many parts of the body, mostly concentrated upon surgeries of the abdomen and digestive tract, skin and soft tissues, and hernias. As part of their practice, many general surgeons additionally perform surgery on blood vessels (vascular surgery), removal of cancer and tumors (surgical oncology), or procedures on the thyroid or breasts.
After graduating from medical school, physicians pursuing the specialty of general surgery typically train in a five-year residency. Some then follow this with additional fellowship training in order to further specialize.
