HIV-2 was isolated in 1986 from people with AIDS in west Africa.[1] It is thought to have present in the population for a long time previously. It is still found mostly in West Africa. Immune system damage in HIV-2 patients tends to come more slowly than it does in HIV-1. It accounts for about one-tenth of one percent of HIV infections worldwide.[2]
