Intervertebral disks are fibrocartilaginous structures interposed between two adjacent vertebral bodies, creating a fibrous joint between the two bones. The disks consist of a dense, fibrous, ring-shaped outer portion called the anulus fibrosus, surrounding a gelatinous inner portion called the nucleus pulposus. The nucleus pulposus is the remnant of the embryonic notochord.

Herniated Disks

If the anulus fibrosus becomes weakened, the gelatinous nucleus pulposus may become extruded, pressing on nearby spinal nerves within the vertebral canal.
