Important Resources for Palmaris brevis:
Description
Palmaris brevis is a small intrinsic muscle of the hand. The majority of the muscle lies in the superficial fascia immediately overlying the hypothenar eminence muscles. It originates from the medial margin of the palmar aponeurosis and inserts into the dermis of the ulnar side of the hand.
How It Works
Palmaris brevis receives motor innervation from the superficial branch of the ulnar nerve.
Its action wrinkles the skin of the ulnar side of the hand; however, its function has not been conclusively demonstrated.
Research
Palmaris brevis can be used as a soft-tissue flap for covering the carpal tunnel after carpal tunnel release surgery. Post-operative spasms of the palmaris brevis may complicate this outcome.
