Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (commonly referred to as SARS) is a respiratory disease in humans caused by the SARS coronavirus (SARS-CoV). Between November 2002 and July 2003, there was almost a pandemic (8,096 known infected cases and 774 deaths worldwide, according to the WHO). It began in the Guangdong province of China and spread to about 37 countries around the world.
