The term tumor is derived from the Latin term tumor (swelling). It originally meant any swelling of the flesh. In contemporary English, however, tumor is now synonymous with solid neoplasm. Other forms of swelling are currently called tumefaction or tumescence, derived from the adjective tumefied.
